Urban Agriculture - Carrot city

Dear Class,

A friend of mine who works in Brazil and Portugal sent me this link and said the class should look at it.

http://www.ryerson.ca/carrotcity/index.html

Its a blog about Urban Agriculture and all the useful ideas and wonderful things it can do.

The section on 'components' is particularly useful as it gives all sorts of possible programmatic insertions your groups can begin to think about.

http://www.ryerson.ca/carrotcity/components.html

Beehives, composters, urban kitchens, vertical greeenhouses, SOLAR BUBBLE GREENHOUSE??! What an amazing array of ideas we have to work with!!

What is aquaponic? I'm going to ask you these questions next week

ANALYSIS RE-WORKING

GENERAL COMMENTS _ ALL GROUPS

1.       All groups should make their analysis format the same. Same size of page, same font, same line weights, same colors for uses.

I WANT TO SEE THIS IS A 3d EXPLODED BUILD UP.

Start with 3d overall topographic map of site. ( Do this in Rhino or whichever).
Add Buildings
Relate your transect to this.
Then Build up your analysis that you’ve got. LABELLING EACH LAYER OF ANALYSIS (1. Topography, 2. Built form, 3. Land use, 4. Connections , 5. Ravines etc.)

See example below.

Image above from competition I did in 2004. Showing Artificial edge and  Buildings within a boundary. You need to have one page each showing new information.

METRICS

Figures, costs.
How much land for each type of vegetable?
How many vegetables approx. per year = RWF?
Distances to Markets?
Cost of washing clothes?
How many Jerry cans filled at natural pool of water and how many at tap?
How many motos?
How many people?
How many goats, cows, pigs, etc
Cost of renting property?
Size of rental property?
How much ground is spoiled with rubbish or soil erosion? (Approximate!)
How big are these public spaces? Areas
How many units per hectare of people living in these areas?

WE NEED FIGURES!!!! THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO GENERATE CONCEPTS AND GROUND YOUR STRATEGIES

Examples of Precedents Analysis

These are some examples of precedents analysis done to help us draw some relevant strategies used to upgrade slums, use wetlands in a way that benefit the surrounding.

Kibera, Pune and Rwampara

Upgrading drainage system in Kibera slum waterways
Comparing density of both Pune and Rwampara
                                  Comparing open spaces

Thursday, 20 September 2012

This is the only one way that people in rwampala used to connect their  homes to the main street.

The ideas of upgrading and recreation in this two project helped a lot to improve urban city in Uganda and Chile

Today we looked at different methods of analysis and how to clearly depict different criteria or 'phenomena'. Students will present their analysis on Monday 24th September.

Examples courtesy of Guilliaume and Killian.

Bio-remediation System in Wadi Hanifah - Saudi Arabia

ground water bio-remediation facility

bio-cells facility
The Bio-remediation is one of the potential strategy, which is natural biological
functions for the remediation of a variety of environmental damages.

This is a good system to use for waste water treatment, cheaper which can be applied in Rwampala wetland.

Urban Think Tank does it again

Today we saw the Urban Think Tank project in Caracas Venezuela.

Here is a continuation of their thinking about the vertical gymnasium, but also the urban agricultural component.

What is most interesting though is how the building is 'lifted' off the ground to hold a basketball court, so the public ream (stairs, ramps etc) flows into public seating and under and into the building.

THIS IS INTEGRATION. LOOK AT THE DIAGRAMS!!!

http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/9/view/19969/urban-think-tank-grotao-fabrica-de-musica.html

Think about multiple use of buildings. Not just residential or an office but MANY programmes. Here they have sport, music school, public spaces, urban agricultural and wetlands.
